Born and raised in Edinburgh, I qualified from Edinburgh University in 1976 with degrees in Medical Science and Medicine.
After a further period of training in hospital and general practice, I became a partner in an NHS practice in the west of Edinburgh in 1980 and remained there for 25 years until 2005. I now work on a part time basis in the Out of Hours GP Service based at Edinburgh's Royal Infirmary.
In my early years as a GP I obtained a post graduate qualification in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and continue to have an interest in antenatal care. I also undertook a period of training in Occupational Health. More recently, I have become aware of the increasing number of requests for alternative or complementary therapies. Working with a wide range of therapists at Medicalternative has persuaded me that complementary therapies are a credible and effective option in the treatment of many acute and chronic conditions either as an alternative to, or in conjunction with, traditional medical treatments. My interest in sport and fitness has enabled me to apply this in a formal way within general practice by performing fitness assessments and sports injury clinics, and to develop links with several health and fitness clubs in Edinburgh. My training in acupuncture has also proved to be of considerable benefit in the treatment of many musculoskeletal conditions. For most of my career I have performed minor surgical procedures for lumps, bumps, moles and other non specific skin lesions and this has led to an interest in the emerging speciality of Medical Aesthetics or 'surgery-lite' cosmetic treatment. This involves the use of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) for permanent hair reduction and photorejuvenation, Botox, cosmetic fillers and chemical peels, and provides a relatively non-invasive alternative to formal cosmetic surgery. | ||
