What is it? Botox is a most effective and popular treatment of fine lines and wrinkles. Although the injections use a toxin which is connected with food poisoning and bacterial warfare the concentration used for cosmetic purposes is an extremely diluted form and also the active bacteria only infect the gut. Botox works by inducing hibernation and relaxation of the injected muscles. The idea being that the client is no longer able to do whatever causes the wrinkles and re-educate, at a subconscious level, the client to avoid the action. Because the area is relaxed the skin becomes smooth and unwrinkled resulting in a natural, relaxed and more youthful appearance. Excellent results are achieved with the deep creases between the eyebrows, frown lines of the forehead, and laughter lines and crows feet radiating away from the eyes. Treatment Prior to your initial treatment you will have a consultation with one of our doctors or nurses to ensure Botox is the most appropriate treatment for you. At this stage we would discuss the number of areas to be treated and address any questions/concerns you may have. Botox is administered as a series of injections with a very fine needle into the appropriate area(s) of the face, and normal activities can be resumed immediately. Some clients describe a slight stinging sensation at the injection site. The effects can be seen over the following few days and last for 4 to 6 months approximately dependent on gender, skin type, ethnicity, depth of contours and if you have had Botox previously. Side Effects As with any injection there is the risk of tenderness, swelling and bruising at the injection site, normally lasing only 48 hours. Very occasionally you may experience drooping of your eyebrow which could last for a few weeks. Before and After Photos![]() |

Frequently Asked Questions What is Botox?
A toxin which paralyses the muscle. What is it made of?
Dry powder that is reconstituted with salt water Is it a man made substance?
It is a natural bacteria grown in labs then freeze dried. How long has it been on the go for?
Botox is not licensed in the UK for cosmetic and should by given by doctors or nurses specifically trained in its use. It has been used for many years on the NHS for treating squints of the eyes; muscle spasms in cerebral palsy and torticollis (neck spasm). What areas does it treat?
Crows feet, frown line, forehead lines. What are the side effects?
Usually none although there is sometimes redness/swelling of the treated site or occasionally mild flu like symptoms for 24 hours. What are the contraindications?
Myasthenia Gravis.
Pregnant/breast feeding mums.
People on blood coagulation therapy i.e. warfarin although those on aspirin or other anti inflammatory medication will have to stop their medication for a few days. How long do you have to leave between treatments?
3 to 6months. How many treatments can you have?
Unlimited - often 2 each year. With new patients we would recommend only have 2 of the 3 areas treated to start with although if it is your first ever treatment we would maybe only treat 1 area initially. Does it hurt?
Minimal, more a discomfort than pain. Does/can it cause any long-term side effects/damage?
None known. Can you fly after the treatment?
We advise that the client does not fly within 48 hours of treatment - a precaution more than a rule (falling asleep against a hard surface i.e. window could be detrimental). How long would you recommend leaving it before using a sun-bed?
48 hours after treatment. How long is it before you can see the results?
After 2-3 days client will start to see signs but it can take up to 14 days for the full effect to be realised. How long does each treatment take?
Treatment consists of pre treatment counselling, actual treatment and post treatment advice – up to 1 hour in total. Actual treatment time is 5-10 minutes per site. Can make-up be applied straight after treatment?
No - leave for 4 hours. What follow-up service is there for worries/concerns and is this included in the price?
Telephone advice for any concerns at all. Client seen 2 weeks post treatment for assessment and top up if required which is included in first price. What happens if the treatment goes wrong? Is the patient stuck with the effect for 6 months?
Adverse side effects are rare as long as good technique is used. Minor problems such as Spock eyebrow can be corrected at the follow-up appointment. Eyebrow droop is not as easy to correct, but this is unlikely to last more than a couple of weeks.
