Bowen Technique
Bowen Therapy originated in Australia. Named after its innovator Tom Bowen it involves a series of gentle and relaxing touches over the body. It is still relatively new to Scotland but its popularity is growing fast thanks to the astonishing effect it has on activating the body's own healing abilities.
What Can It Treat?
Bowen Therapy does not replace medical care or advice but complements it. Some conditions that have responded well to this therapy are:
- Back Pain and Sciatica
- Leg length abnormalities
- Neck & shoulder restriction
- Knee & ankle problems
- Sports Injuries
- RSI (tennis & golfers elbow)
- Migraine and headaches
- Ear and Jaw pain
- Chronic Fatigue & M.E
- Asthma & Bronchitis
- Hay fever & allergies
- Digestive problems
- Menstrual PMS
- Childhood and bed wetting
When You Visit
At Medicalternative we understand how complementary therapies can be most effectively integrated into a total health care plan. Your therapist will therefore start by discussing your medical history with you, she will explain how Bowen Therapy can help you and answer any questions you might have.
- A treatment lasts approximately 45 minutes and consists of a series of light manipulative moves over muscles, tendons and ligaments. The 'moves' encourage deep relaxation and also bring to surface the body's awareness of there being too much tension in an area.
- In the days following the treatment, your body will process what has happened to it and make relevant adjustments. A bit like pressing the re-set button, this will have the effect of relieving muscle and tissue tension and the body will start to correct itself.
- Treatment can be done through light clothing. It is gentle and non-invasive and is suitable for all ages, from the newborn to the very elderly.
A series of three or more treatments is usually required to get maximum benefits from Bowen Therapy. You will be advised on an appropriate treatment schedule when you have your initial consultation.
Are There Any Reactions?
People can have quite strong reactions to Bowen Therapy and experience tiredness, stiffness and headaches. These reactions show that the treatment is having an effect and should not be taken as an indication that treatment should be stopped.
