Podiatry
Medicalternative’s podiatrists are highly skilled health professionals who can prevent, diagnose, treat and rehabilitate abnormal conditions of the feet and lower limbs.
What Can We Treat?
We can help with almost all problems relating to the feet and lower limbs – from blisters and chilblains, through to sweaty feet and verrucas. Our podiatrists can also relieve pain and treat infections.
We are also experts in the field of Podiatric Biomechanics and we can assess and treat all aspects of human locomotion, diagnose specific lower limb problems and help keep you active.
If you have a problem with your feet or lower limbs, but are unsure what podiatric treatment is required, call for an initial consultation. Home visits are available for housebound patients. We will carry out visits in Edinburgh, East and West Lothian.

When You Visit Us
The treatment you will receive will depend on the problems you are experiencing:
- Initial Consultation: In your initial podiatry consultation your feet and lower limbs will be assessed – your specialist will look at the condition of your skin and nails and the structure and function of your feet and limbs. We will then discuss any problems with you and advise you on the appropriate course of action.
- Routine Foot Care: Routine podiatry care consists of nail cutting and removal of corns and calluses. These appointments can also be used to treat verruca and ingrown toenails.
- Nail Surgery: Toenails may need removed if they are ingrown and causing discomfort. If necessary we will carry out the appropriate nail surgery under local anaesthetic. Surgery appointments usually last for one and a half hours.
- Biomechanical Assessment: Your assessment will take around 60 minutes and will include an examination of the way you walk (this is done on a treadmill) and measurement of the axis of motion in the pelvis and lower limb.
Depending on the results of the assessment, we will prescribe orthotics to correct your gait. Orthotics are worn inside shoes to correct misalignment, limit excessive movement or to redirect excessive pressure or load.
