I first became interested in human sexuality while at medical school in Edinburgh (1973-1979) but it was 1984 before I had the opportunity to study the subject in more depth under Dr John Bancroft, a world expert in psychosexual medicine, who is now Director of the Kinsey Institute. In that year I also became a principal in general practice and I have continued working in both fields ever since.

Having completed my training as a sex therapist, I started work in the Brook Advisory Centre in Edinburgh and set up a sexual problems service within it in 1986. I was also involved in the sex education programme run by Brook in various Edinburgh schools and found through this that I thoroughly enjoyed teaching. I felt very strongly that a working knowledge of human sexuality and its problems was important for all members of the medical profession so returned to Edinburgh University to teach medical students on the subject. I have also tried to impart my enthusiasm about sexual problems to doctors and other health professionals, through lectures and workshops around the UK.

I started work at the sexual problems clinic in the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh in 1989, initially as a research fellow, then in 1991 until 1997 (when the clinic closed) as a Hospital Practitioner. In 1993, in addition, I was appointed Hospital Practitioner in the Sexual Problems clinic at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. In 1997, I started consulting privately in psychosexual medicine at the Murrayfield Hospital in Edinburgh.

In March 2003, along with my two partners Dr Alan Macpherson and Dr Nigel Wood I opened a private medical practice combining holistic general practice with complementary therapy allowing me greater freedom to offer shorter notice appointments in both general practice and sexual medicine. We also have a wide range of support mechanisms within the practice including counselling and medical aesthetics.

A large part of my time in my hospital and practice clinics is spent with transsexual patients but I also see patients with the entire range of sexual difficulties both as individuals and couples. I can offer psychosexual counselling but also drug treatment for sexual difficulties.
