'Asking for help doesn't mean that we are weak or incompetent. It usually indicates an advanced level of honesty and intelligence' Anne Wilson Schaef 'Women's bodies,Women's Wisdom'
Nowhere as much as in human sexuality, is there a balance between the PHYSICAL, the PSYCHOLOGICAL and the EMOTIONAL elements of how we function. This is reflected in how I work. Where medication has a role I am able to prescribe, but I more often work at the Psychological level as a Catalyst for Change. We cannot change Who we are, but we can Think differently about ourselves, and subsequently we can change how we Behave. I have been a GP for more than 30 years having graduated from Aberdeen University in 1972. For the last twenty years I have mainly worked as a family doctor in Galloway, after a spell of travelling and working overseas. The emphasis of my work has been on the care of women and children, especially, as like many of us, I have struggled to get the balance between work and home. I have four grown up ‘children’ who are now in their twenties. My reservations about the lack of real healing in modern medicine have opened my mind to other ways of practicing as a doctor. I have worked as a psychosexual therapist within the NHS in Glasgow for eighteen years and in Dumfries for seven. Sex is a Life Force and surprisingly neglected in the field of Medicine. Although it is not always wise to medicalise what hopefully should be a healthy part of being human, it is very hard to know to whom to turn when things go wrong. Sex is like the air we breathe: it is only important if we are not getting it. Sexual problems can be isolating and can give rise to overwhelming feelings of shame, guilt and despair. You are not alone as such problems are surprisingly common and can touch into all aspects of our lives causing relationships to suffer. After five years practising as psychosexual therapist, I stepped out of the standard medical model and went on a four-year experiential training course in Counselling and Psychotherapy. This covered the Person Centred Approach, Transactional Analysis (T.A.), Gestalt, and Avenues to the Subconscious, e.g. Hypnosis and N.L.P. In my work, I aim to draw together all these threads and use whatever feels appropriate for the individual or couple. I treat people who have loss of desire or relationship problems, men with erectile difficulties or premature ejaculation, women with pain or problems in having intercourse, and people with abuse issues or who have suffered a sexual or childbirth trauma. I use an INTEGRATIVE approach founded on a solid bedrock of training and common sense.
