Dr Shelagh Neil
Dr Neil has been a GP for more than 35 years, having graduated from Aberdeen University in 1972. For over twenty years she was a family doctor in Galloway, after a spell of travelling and working overseas.
The emphasis of her work has been on the care of women and children and she has been a psychosexual doctor within the NHS in Glasgow for twenty years, in Dumfries for ten and at Medicalternative privately since 2004.
“My treatment approach depends on whatever sexual problem the client brings,” she says. “If a couple present, I deal with the couple, but mostly I work towards enabling individuals to work through their own issues. I aim to go underneath the presenting problem and get to the root of it. By doing this I hope to be a real catalyst for change.”
Initially she used a Behavioural approach to sexual problems, but following a four-year experiential training course in Counselling and Psychotherapy, she now incorporates various methods such as Transactional Analysis, Gestalt and avenues to the subconscious in her treatments.
