Flu Vaccinations in Edinburgh

Seasonal flu is a highly infectious respiratory illness that spreads rapidly through the population, passed on via the coughs and sneezes of infected people. Each year a ‘flu jab’ is developed that gives good protection against that year’s flu strain.

Our Service

Medicalternative runs annual flu vaccination clinics between September and February 'while stocks last'. We get the flu vaccines a few weeks before the NHS, so you can get protected earlier if you come to us. As flu viruses’ change all the time, so different vaccines are made each year. To stay protected, it is essential to be re-vaccinated every year before the winter season.

NB: If you have asthma, diabetes or are aged 65 or over, you can get the flu vaccination on the NHS.

When You Visit Us

When you come in for your treatment we will discuss the vaccination with you and make you as comfortable and calm as possible. The vaccination itself involves a single injection in the arm and will be given by a fully trained nurse.

Children who have never had a flu vaccine before will need two injections, spaced four weeks apart.

Occasionally people suffer side effects with the flu vaccine. The most common of these are fever, feeling unwell, shivering, tiredness, headache, sweating, muscle and joint pain. Skin reactions include redness, mild swelling, pain, ecchymosis (blue/black staining of the skin). These are usually mild and will resolve within a day or two.
